A VR experience where users control weather with gestures.

Timeline: 6 weeks
Role: Interaction Design, Experience Design, Prototyping Direction
Tools: Unity, Meta XR Toolkit, UniStorm Weather System
Context

Forecast is a VR experience that lets users summon weather through simple, ritual-like interactions. Designed as a calm escape from Los Angeles’ climate monotony, it blends sensory variation, atmospheric transitions, and meditative pacing.

Problem statement

Los Angeles experiences 284 days of sunshine per year, creating a sense of climate sameness. In dense urban environments, people often feel disconnected from nature’s cycles, sensory variation, and seasonal rhythms. So how can VR recreate the emotional grounding that seasons bring?

Concept

In overbuilt cities like LA, where weather rarely changes, life can feel flat and disconnected from nature. This project creates a virtual escape—a lush green world with a sacred temple at the center—where users summon rain, snow, or storms to reconnect with lost sensations and find a moment of calm.

Prototyping process

Built over six weeks: we first tested the core idea using simple weather icons and a placeholder altar, then developed the final prototype with a sky-temple environment, atmospheric transitions, and clean grab-and-place interactions.

My Contribution

  • Defined the concept and emotional direction of the experience.
  • Designed the core grab-and-place weather interaction.
  • Built and arranged the Unity scene and atmosphere.
  • Directed how lighting, fog, and particles respond to each weather orb.
  • Wrote the simple prompts and pacing for a calm user flow.
  • Guided interaction logic while using AI and instructor support for scripting.

Takeaways

  • Symbolic gestures make VR interactions easy to understand.
  • Layered lighting, fog, and sound help build weather that feels real.
  • A simple UI helps people stay fully immersed.
  • Small timing changes can strongly shape mood and calmness.
  • AI tools help make scripting faster for testing and improving ideas.
